FAQ — Portugal for digital nomads

+Do I have to pay tax in Portugal as a digital nomad?

If you stay >183 days you become tax-resident. Under IFICI (the post-2024 replacement for NHR), eligible workers in qualifying activities pay a 20% flat rate on Portuguese income for 10 years. Foreign-source income is often exempt. Confirm with a Portuguese accountant before relocating.

+How long does the D8 visa take?

Plan 60–120 days from consulate appointment to receiving the visa, then schedule an AIMA biometrics appointment within 4 months of arrival. AIMA backlogs are real — book early.

+Can my family come with me?

Yes. Both D7 and D8 allow family reunification for spouses and dependent children. Show added income (~50% of the main applicant's threshold per dependent) and family documents.

+Is healthcare included?

Residents access the public SNS system. Most nomads also carry private insurance (~€40–€80/mo) for shorter waits.
